Picking the Perfect School

Ten years, one Ph.D. and thousands of conversations with parents taught me how to pick the best possible school for kids. Here are five great ways to find the school that will change your kid's life forever.

Great schools are on a mission.
The best schools have a greater purpose that unites their entire community. It can be religioius commitment, public service, French culture or dedication to supporting special learning styles. Either way, schools with a clear mission offer a strong sense of purpose that motivates high achievement. What does it look like? Mission driven schools state their beliefs clearly and act on them consistently.

Great teachers plan ahead, above and behind.
Great schools are made by teachers who don't just bring content to kids. They nurture inborn talents and help children discover hidden gifts. I love educators who develop their kids inner potential, not just their math and English test scores. How can I tell? When you observe a school, look for teaching that is smooth and feels well planned. Instructors should relate to the material seamlessly and devote most of their attention the needs of students.

Who Will Teach Kids to Code2 Great schools are uniquely suited to your child.
The bad news: There is no such thing as a great school. The great news: By matching your kids' personality and needs, a good school will change your child's life. What does that look like? Some schools cheer for their swimming team. Others see their robotics club as the superstars. Who does your kid cheer for? Answer that question honestly and you'll find the place where he or she will thrive.

Order is essential.
At my favorite school in Dallas, the kids greet adults and hold doors open for them. Wow! This is a place where kids learn how to show respect for themselves and others. The worst I've ever visited? Kids walked through bright, clean buildings scolded by teachers if they raised their voices or did not walk in a straight line.
What's the difference? When kids create an orderly community on their own they learn a habit that will help them be positive leaders for life. To get there schools must empower and trust as much as they discipline and hold accountable.

Technology is used wisely.
How much Technology should I see in the regular classroom? For pre-school, NONE. Absolutely none. From First Grade on, lots but only if it is well used. This is worth a full article all its own, so stay tuned for updates.

In the meantime, we wish all of our parents success in finding exactly the right place for children to grow and thrive.
